Mishkin Berteig

Mishkin Berteig President and Co-Founder

Mishkin is a co-founder of Berteig Consulting and has 20 years of experience working in Agile environments starting as a technical contributor and now as a Leadership Team coach for our client organizations. Mishkin is dedicated to innovation and operational excellence and facilitates the continuous improvement culture so important to Berteig. Mishkin has written over 750 articles on Agile Advice. Mishkin founded BERTEIG in September 2004.

Mishkin Berteig has been training, coaching and consulting for organizations adopting Agile since 2001.  Mishkin co-founded Berteig in 2004.  Mishkin is committed to helping individuals, teams and organizations apply Agile to transform their way of working.

Mishkin has assisted organizations of all sizes to make the transformation from traditional methods to Agile methods (Extreme Programming, Scrum, Lean, OpenAgile).  Assistance includes Agile culture change, Agile change management, executive management coaching, Agile management, Agile product, project and operations management, Agile teamwork and Agile engineering practices.

Mishkin has developed and delivered Agile training both in public and in-house seminars for over 5,000 people in Canada and abroad.  Courses have been as short as three-hour intro-style and as long as five-day boot-camp-style, and audiences have ranged from junior team members to senior executives.  Mishkin has been a Certified Scrum Trainer since 2005.

Mishkin maintains a popular blog, Agile Advice, with hundreds of articles about agile methods.

Melanie Andersen

Melanie Andersen Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer

Melanie is a co-founder of Berteig Consulting Inc and worked behind-the-scenes for several years before taking the formal CFO and COO role in January of 2014. Melanie brings financial discipline and strong focus on efficiency to Berteig.

Melanie Andersen, as Chief Financial Officer, monitors and manages the financial health of Berteig. She also helps with all the small, yet important details in running a business smoothly as our Chief Operations Officer, general office manager and executive assistant to Mishkin Berteig. If you have a problem that needs solving or a question that needs answering, please don’t hesitate to contact her. Melanie founded BERTEIG in September 2004.

Melanie oversees and manages the finances of Berteig including invoicing, accounts receivable, payroll, bookkeeping, reporting and investing. She serves our clients by assisting with receipts, refunds, payments and invoicing.  Melanie’s money management skills helped Berteig survive its early years as a small business, created financial stability, and over a decade later continues to help Berteig grow and thrive. As a partner, Melanie enjoys co-creating and guiding the future direction of Berteig and continuously learning more about leadership, culture and high-performance teams.  Melanie has been busy lately overseeing the rebranding of Berteig.

Melanie homeschooled her four children for thirteen years. She’s a trained Montessori teacher, a trained doula and has a university degree in Psychology.  Her ongoing interests include knitting, gardening, and healing through nutrition.

Melanie spent a year in the Marshall Islands creating a youth social development project which served to address gang violence in the country. She then went on to study education at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji while continuing her work with Pacific Island youth communities. Melanie continues to be passionate about supporting vulnerable women and children around the world.

Travis Birch

Travis Birch has extensive experience in consulting, coaching and facilitation in organizational transformation and team building methods since 2008, with a focus on Agile methods. Travis is highly committed to helping transform people, process and culture in organizations. Travis brings patience, integrity and sensitivity to others as personal qualities to his work with organizations. Travis is a Certified Scrum Professional, Accredited Kanban Trainer, and a certified SAFe Program Consultant. Travis has contributed dozens of articles to Agile Advice over the years. Travis joined BERTEIG in July 2008.

Travis Birch has extensive experience in consulting, coaching and facilitation in organizational transformation and team building methods since 2008, with a focus on Agile methods. Travis has worked with executive leaders, managers, staff and other consultants to move them towards higher levels of Real Agility. This includes organizational consulting, transformational change management, culture change, overcoming resistance to change, all while focused on great business results and creating a great work environment.

Travis has aided numerous teams to help them get through the four stages of team development to reach a high-performance level. One team improved so much that it went from being shunned by stakeholders to winning a government-wide award for project delivery excellence.

Prior to consulting, Travis was involved in numerous community development and volunteer efforts while working as a professional ballet performer. Travis is highly committed to helping transform people, process and culture in organizations. Travis brings patience, integrity and sensitivity to others as personal qualities to his work with organizations.

David Sabine Senior Consultant

David’s professional career highlights the intersections of business, technology, education and innovation. David has 22 years experience in software development, 18 years coaching and public-speaking, and 8 years experience working with Agile teams. He is regular guest lecturer at the Ivey School of Business, TEDx speaker alumnus, and a seasoned Agilist. David has recently started contributing to Agile Advice. David is also a Scrum Alliance REP Trainer certified to deliver CSM and CSPO training. David also holds the rare and prestigious Certified Scrum Developer certification indicating his ability to create high-quality code in an Agile environment. David joined BERTEIG in April 2015.

David’s professional career highlights the intersections of business, technology, media and education.

David is a seasoned Agile practitioner, guest lecturer at Ivey School of Business, a TEDx speaker, and an experienced product developer.  He has significant in-the-trenches experience using Agile methods with product development teams and service groups – including Scrum, Kanban, LeanUX, and OpenAgile.

David provides expertise and practical recommendations across the spectrum of an organization, from business leaders and teams to market.

Mark Kalyta

Mark has worked to build businesses in the Canadian marketplace for over a decade. Mark joined BERTEIG in August 2017.

With 24 years of sales experience, Mark brings an extensive and successful track record. This includes 12 years consulting, selling, managing and delivering software, platforms & professional services to the Telecom, Government, Insurance, Finance, Energy, Oil & Gas, Retail, Manufacturing and Pharmaceutical industries.

Building and managing a pipeline of opportunities, in both existing base and Net New Name customers, and deliver incremental revenue through upselling and cross-selling efforts.

Highly sales process-driven with a defined, consultative approach, to identify and mark new opportunities.

This includes SWOT Analysis, and by identifying Trends, Implications, Possibilities, Risks, and Solutions to enable Enterprise clients better predict and understand their portfolios, and the solutions that support and drive value for their organization.

Strong research and business case development skills, including analytics, modeling, forecasting, business case development, outlining any financial impact or threats to scope, while providing recommendations both internally with the team and externally with the client.

David Vicentin

David is a Lean Six-Sigma Master Black Belt and process consultant with experience growing consulting businesses. David joined BERTEIG in July of 2017.

David Vicentin has delivered Operational Excellence and Agile implementation for the past 15 years as a management consultant.  His clients come from diverse industries in North America, South America and Europe.

Working at different organizational levels from operatives to senior management, his focus is to achieve sustainably higher results.  David has trained, mentored and coached thousands of people for many businesses, with a focus on increasing personal performance for coaches and improving their business environment, overall.

As an Industrial Engineer, Master in Economics and Finance and Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma, his ability to evolve people results in service delivery which increases value, reduces cost and improves both quality and productivity for his clients.

Facilitator of more than 250 projects using DMAIC, DMADV, RCA, Kaizen, FMEA and SCRUM, he focuses on cost reduction, quality and productivity improvements, cash flow improvement and customer satisfaction.

High profile clients include Volkswagen, Saint Gobain, Nortel Networks, Sherwin Williams, Coca-Cola, SITA, HSBC and Rolls Royce.  David has lead projects and workshops in materials/logistics, manufacturing, purchases, finance, sales, R&D and information technology areas.

Nima Honarmandan

Nima displays dedication and passion in his work to assist our clients. He has a Master’s degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and has helped organizations adopt Real Agility since 2013. Nima is a Certified ScrumMaster and Certified Scrum Product Owner. Nima joined BERTEIG in March of 2013.

After completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nima decided to work for an NGO abroad. He came to the conclusion that he liked helping people and would like to make a career doing that – embracing Agile for business was a perfect fit.

After a successful career in Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Sales; Nima has found his passion helping business people get the most out of their staff by empowering them with Agile processes.

Valerie has a BFA, an MA, is Associate Professor in Theatre Arts, and is author of “I Want a Poem”. Valerie now lends her talents serving teams with Agile Improve techniques for team-building. She also does some of the Customer Service and Marketing Operations for BERTEIG. Valerie has written a number of articles on Agile Advice. Valerie joined BERTEIG in November 2012.

BERTEIG History

Berteig Consulting Inc. was founded in 2004 by Mishkin Berteig and Melanie Andersen. The first major consulting engagement that we had was with CapitalOne in Richmond Virginia. At that engagement we also brought in two sub-contractors. This was our auspicious launch! Since then we have added partners, grown, struggled, and learned a great deal about what it takes to help an organization successfully transform its people, process and culture! Major milestones include:

  • Berteig Consulting Inc. founded by Mishkin Berteig and Melanie Andersen.

Started working with Nortel. This was a hard lesson in cultural momentum.

Started working on the OpenAgile method as a more general-purpose approach than Scrum.

January: Hired Paul Heidema as our first full-time employee.

August: Sponsored the Agile 2008 conference in Toronto.

Grew too quickly for economic conditions. Hired 4 staff and then had to dismiss 3 staff. That was a bad year.

Great successes with reference accounts Equitable Life in Waterloo, Ontario and Suncor in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

2011
Successful Agile transformation with Workopolis. Re-branded our consulting services as the Real Agility Program.

2012
January: Launched our training portal World Mindware. Began work with AIMIA and Shaw Media.

September: Moved head office to London, Ontario

Hired our first dedicated sales and business development person, Nima Honarmandan.

January: Promoted Travis Birch to Partner (shareholder and member of the board), moved Melanie Andersen into public role as CFO and COO. Launched our Scrum Team Assessment product.

Major re-branding from Berteig Consulting to just BERTEIG (everyone called us that anyway!) and our new logo.
